So, I've worked on some measurements as a first step towards building a 3D model of the find as it progresses. Calculations are crudely made and solely based on what has been published, ie, 1.45m height of the sphinxes, 4.5m width of the corridor.

Measuring somehow the plinths right at the front (taking into account that they are closer to the camera sensor rendering the metric baton useless for other areas of the photo on the z axis), I am guesstimating approximately 0.9m, which as stated in the graphic above, it verifies the 4.5m of he corridor.

Moving on with guess-culations, I came up with the measurements shown below.

Next measurements, among others, will include door width/height/depth (already guesstimating depth at ~0.90m), wall plinths length, and making a top view plan of what is known.

A few nights ago, I rushed a 10 minute model on 3DS, just to get a quick pseudo-feel and some brain juice flowing. This will be scrapped of course and re-started with better guesstimated measurements; like the such posted above.

Stay tuned

Actively pursued by the interdisciplinary team, under the direction of Mrs Peristeri,  shielding the funerary monument and surrounding area immediately is a top level priority.

The work includes:
-Configuration of the embankments of the first chamber for counterweight and stability of the second diaphragm (photo 1.2).
-Complete the necessary work on supports for temporary stabilization of architrave of the second diaphragm, which appears to be based unsteadily. (photo 3)
-Complete the necessary actions to retain the wall with the Sphinxes. (photo 4.5)
-Construction work table with plywood panels, to the first partition, the level of the architrave, for secure access and detailed close observation and inspection of the dome of the first chamber and the safety of workers. (photo 6)
-Construction of temporary drainage groove on the outer perimeter of the enclosure for easy draining rainwater and install waterproofing membrane behind the area of mortgage protection existing entrance to the tomb. (photo 7.8)

Is underway to design the temporary shoring and shore up the second diaphragm, particularly on the west side, to allow safe access for mud removal work, dome support and the second chamber.

Work is also ongoing cleaning of the enclosure of the tomb, in the southwest. After completion of protective measures will begin excavation work in the monument. (photo 9)

Ongoing excavations on the hill castes, Amphipolis, the KH Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities. With the removal of soil from the vestibule, the space behind the wall of the Sphinxes, revealed part marmarothetimenou floor, with white, small irregular fragments of marble, on red background, preserved in excellent condition. (photo 1.2). At the threshold of the first septal wall of the Sphinxes, found on the fresco that covered the traces of blue. (photo 3).

It was also found that in all three places, after sealing the wall, there is loose sandy embankment, as the maximum height of the dome. The three areas, created by the construction of the transverse diaphragm walls along the dome seems katachothikan by sealing the burial monument. The walls partly function as retaining elements of weak embankments. Both the vacuum seal on the outer wall and the holes in the next panels, which may have come from removing stones or non installation of stone, appears to be part of a plan sealing the tomb. (photo 4)

The finding, to date, there are three sites along the dome is another special feature of the monument, which was revealed to the hill castes.

The first septal wall, after login, disclosed only in the Ionic architrave, which is decorated with embossed rosettes oktafyllous. In the extreme eastern part architrave appeared the upper part side jamb. (photo 5). Also, it was found that the missing extreme western part of the architrave, as the overlying this stone. As already stated on August 25-on diaphragm wall will be the entrance, which leads to the second area of the monument. The entry form will be revealed after the removal of soil within the next few days.

technical work

At the same time, the progress of the excavation evolve apace, completion of worksite infrastructure and the shielding of the monument and the wider area, from unexpected weather.

To protect the monument from the rain, except for the construction of the shelter, which was completed (photo 6) started peripherals monument, the configuration conductors runoff of rainwater.

For removal of loose sand embankments required structural engineering and geotechnical study which includes:
1 In full boxing bulkheads with wooden elements.
2 Formulation of "lofts" rack heavy duty work, which allow shore up the dome (photo 7) to establish an appropriate splint and smooth access from room to room and safe implementation of apochomatisis spaces. (photo 8).
3 The strong bracing second septal area to address the strong impulses from the land of the next space.
4 The external bracing entry with Sphinxes on safety diaphragm and seat tailstocks data that may be required during the progress of the excavation work. (photo 9.10).

Ongoing excavations by KH Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in Tomb caste, Amphipolis. Continued removal of the blocks of the wall sealing and revealed almost the entire front of the funerary monument, which is a highly original composition for the same architecture type of the Macedonian tomb of the last quarter of the 4th century BC. (photo 1)

The facade is decorated not differ from the side walls, with fresco imitates the broad marble wall. The maximum spacing between the pilasters is 1,67m. The typology suggests that there were no door panels but this is mere inlet opening. (photo 2)

Also, with the continued removal of soil, inside the vestibule, appeared beneath the marble Ionic architrave, inset marble from uprights, along the entire length of the side walls. (photo 3, 4) Within 6m. opening the inlet revealed uppers marble diaphragm wall, deficient in part of the left part (picture 5). Behind him are two guest rooms.

The diaphragm wall is revealed also a marble architrave and cornice, like the equivalent of the same precinct. Bring oktafyllous decoration with embossed rosettes at the height of the architrave of the side walls (photo 6).

The diaphragm wall will be no second entrance that leads to the interior of the monument. Soils of the space created behind the door, will be removed in the coming days if the permit mounting and maintenance work in places that have been disclosed.

Archaeological Discovery, Amphipolis, N.Greece

A very exciting archaeological tomb has been unearthed, estimated dating as back as 325bc-300bc, and believed to have been designed by 'legendary' architect Dinokrates, closely affiliated to Alexander The Great.

The size alone of the tomb is impressive. A whopping 500sq.m./5382sq.ft. and 25m/270ft tall, is the biggest in the Balkan area. Who, or what, is inside the tomb is not known yet as they have not actually made it in yet. The shear size of it suggests someone of dynastic standing and extended family. Of course there is a high probability of tomb raiding across the millennia, which can only mean artifacts & information lost in eternity.

This was discovered in Northern Greece, in an area called Amfipolis, which was the main nautical base of Alexander's dynasty. That was also the embarkation point of his campaign to Asia Minor, NE Africa and into Asia.

The tomb's entry is made of marble from Thasos, and the entrance was built up with plinths. Once they were removed, they discovered the entrance was 'guarded' by two sphinxes, placed opposite and facing each other. Unfortunately, their heads are missing, so staring contests have been off the table for quite some time.

They need at least 2 or 3 more weeks to enter the tomb.

Even though I was never really fond of Alexander the Great and his blood/enlightenment endeavor, I am getting goosebumps at the prospect of this being his final resting place. I sincerely hope it does not become a cheap marketing trick nicely wrapped around wishful thinking from our side to attract tourism, but as a find, it's of titanic magnitude.

here's also a link I found in The Guardian

There are not many pictures in circulation yet, as the project is still under wraps and heavily guarded against looting and raiding.
